What you’ll make

Sew a long, flowing skirt with an asymmetrical front section and a generously gathered ruffle around the hem. An elastic waistband makes it comfortable and easy to pull on.

The skirt has functional side-seam pockets and an overlapping front detail with decorative buttons. The buttons can be nonfunctional, so buttonholes are optional.

What you’ll learn in this class

  • Stabilize curved and bias-cut edges.
  • Construct functional side-seam pockets.
  • Assemble the asymmetrical skirt sections.
  • Gather a long ruffle evenly.
  • Create an elastic waistband without twisting the elastic.
  • Finish the front with decorative or working buttons.

Fabric suggestions

Choose a lightweight fabric with fluid drape and movement. The class uses viscose and also discusses modal, crepe, georgette, satin, lyocell and suitable drapey knits.

Use one fabric throughout or combine a solid and a print to emphasize the asymmetrical upper section and ruffle.

Make it your own

Keep the full ruffle for the original long silhouette, use a smaller ruffle for a shorter skirt, or omit it and hem the asymmetrical skirt body.

Sew the buttons through both overlapping layers for a decorative treatment, or make working buttonholes before securing the overlap.

Compare it with the Daphne Maxi Skirt, Mimi Skirt and Marina Skirt.

Sizes and measurements

The pattern covers sizes 34/36 through 54/56. Its chart spans waists from 64–70 cm to 104–110 cm and hips from 90–96 cm to 130–136 cm.

The listed total skirt length ranges from 96 cm in size 34/36 to 101 cm in size 54/56.

The class includes the video lesson, graded A4 and A0 pattern files, and an information sheet with the measurement chart.
