What you’ll make

The Cabrils is an open-front quilted vest with a shaped neckline, rounded lower corners, and optional shoulder ruffles.

The sample has a shortened length, finished armholes, and bias binding around the outer edge.

The project adapts the front and back pieces from the Quebec jacket pattern to create a sleeveless layer.

For other vest styles, see the Tarragona Vest and Bohemian Vest.

What you’ll learn in this class

  • Adapt the Quebec front and back pieces for a sleeveless vest.
  • Choose and mark a shorter or longer length.
  • Reshape the neckline and round the lower front corners.
  • Adjust the shoulders, armholes, and back neckline while matching adjoining seams.
  • Prepare and position optional folded shoulder ruffles.
  • Finish the armholes and apply bias binding smoothly around curves.

Fabric and supplies

The sample uses fabric quilted on both sides and bias tape for the outer-edge finish.

When working with a directional print, position the pattern pieces so the motifs run consistently.

Make it your own

Lengthen or shorten the vest, reshape or lower the neckline, open the armholes further, or omit the ruffles for a simpler outline.

The optional ruffle is adapted from the smaller ruffle piece in the Madrid T-shirt pattern. You can alter its reach and fullness before cutting the mirrored pieces.

Sizing and pattern formats

The Quebec base pattern covers grouped sizes 34/36 through 54/56 and is supplied in A4 and A0 formats.

Select your Quebec size before tracing the front and back pieces needed for the vest.

The video class demonstrates the pattern alterations and construction of the vest, including the optional shoulder ruffles and bias-bound edge.
