What you’ll make

Sew a wide stretch-knit headband with an interlaced Celtic-style knot. Its enclosed construction creates a comfortable finish without a bulky seam at the nape.

Wear it to keep your hair controlled at the beach, by the pool, or with the bohemian vest for a boho-inspired look.

What you’ll learn in this class

  • Check the grain and greatest stretch before cutting.
  • Choose a ballpoint or jersey needle for knit fabric.
  • Sew the strips with a serger or standard machine.
  • Form the interlaced knot from two folded strips.
  • Enclose the joins for a smooth, low-bulk finish.
  • Turn the band and close the opening neatly.

Fabric and supplies

Choose a knit fabric with good stretch, and check its grain and stretch direction before cutting.

You can also upcycle stretchy sections of old T-shirts or other knit garments.

Make it your own

Make the band narrower for a slimmer look or reduce its size for a child. You can also cross the final joins, although that variation is slightly harder to assemble.

Try different prints or solid colors to change the look of the knot.
