What you’ll make
Sew a craft apron with multiple pockets for keeping tools close while you sew, paint, cook or teach. Its layout accommodates small tools, pens, brushes, rulers, scissors and other frequently used supplies.
Adjustable buckle closures at the neck and waist make the apron easy to fit, put on and remove. The sample also includes a flapped pocket, a narrow tool loop and an optional carabiner.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Stabilize curved edges before they stretch out of shape.
- Finish fraying fabric with zigzag or an overcasting stitch.
- Attach the facing, straps and buckles with tidy turned edges.
- Prepare patch pockets and divide them into practical compartments.
- Create pocket depth with stitched darts.
- Sew a pocket flap and add a snap closure.
Fabric and materials
The sample uses sturdy denim for the apron base and floral canvas for the pockets. Canvas is also suggested for the base when you want a firm woven fabric.
Webbing and buckles form the adjustable closures. Depending on your design, you may also add binding, rings, a carabiner and a snap or hook-and-loop closure.
Make it your own
Position the pockets to suit your tools, and change the stitched divisions for pens, brushes or long rulers. The carabiner and tool loop are optional and can be placed where they are easiest to reach.
Replace the buckles with classic apron ties, make the apron wider or longer, or use hook-and-loop tape instead of a snap on the flapped pocket.
Prefer a shorter, skirt-style design? Try the short craft apron with pockets.
