What you’ll make

Sew a wall organizer that keeps sewing or craft supplies visible and within reach. It combines divided pockets, elastic holders, shaped scissor pockets and a removable pincushion secured with hook-and-loop tape.

An upper dowel and cord support the organizer. An optional lower dowel can hold rolls of washi tape or ribbon. The finished sample measures approximately 90 cm wide by 65 cm long.

What you’ll learn in this class

  • Transfer the layout and placement marks to the organizer base.
  • Form and divide pockets for tools, boxes and small notions.
  • Bind shaped scissor pockets for a clean, colorful edge.
  • Secure elastic holders while controlling their stretch.
  • Sew and fill a removable hook-and-loop pincushion.
  • Manage a large, structured panel at the sewing machine.
  • Create dowel channels and prepare the organizer for hanging.

Fabric and materials

Choose a non-fraying material with enough body to support the contents. The class uses 3 mm felt; faux leather and softshell are also suggested.

Canvas or poplin would require a different construction method and are not recommended for this version. You will also work with elastic, bias binding, hook-and-loop tape, cord and wooden dowels.

Make it your own

Follow the supplied arrangement or reposition the pockets and elastic holders around your tools. You can also change the panel’s overall dimensions to suit your available wall space.

  • Coordinate the felt, elastic and binding for a monochrome or colorful finish.
  • Use matching thread or make the stitching a contrasting detail.
  • Omit the lower dowel or optional bias-bound edges.
