What you’ll make
Sew the structured DeLuca Backpack with a top zipper, carrying handles, and adjustable shoulder straps.
Inside are a padded laptop compartment and divided pockets. Two side pockets hold bottles, while a lower front zipper pocket keeps smaller items accessible.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Add batting, interfacing, and stabilizer where needed.
- Plan and sew divided interior pockets.
- Shape the side bottle pockets with controlled fullness.
- Construct the front zipper pocket and top opening.
- Assemble and turn the structured exterior and lining.
- Reinforce the handles and adjustable shoulder straps.
Fabric and support layers
The project combines exterior fabric, lining, batting or interfacing, and stabilizer. The laptop section and back panel receive extra support.
Fusible layers can be pressed in place. For nonfusible support, the class demonstrates temporary spray adhesive and edge basting to hold the layers together.
Make it your own
Divide and position the interior pocket to suit what you carry. Shape the side pockets with gathering or an inverted pleat.
Sew the handles with reinforced box-and-cross stitching or attach them with rivets. Decorative zipper stops and topstitching are optional.

The finished backpack measures approximately 34 cm wide, 10 cm deep, and 34 cm high.
