What you’ll make
Sew the Harper, an adult backpack with a lined interior, adjustable straps, a padded back, and a main zipper beneath a subtle fabric overlap.
Two exterior pockets share one flap and closure. An interior slip pocket keeps small items easy to find, and the sample was tested with laptops inside.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Interface the outer panels and quilt the padded back.
- Make lined exterior pockets and a shaped flap.
- Add an interior slip pocket.
- Install the zipper between the outer fabric and lining.
- Create the overlap that partly conceals the zipper.
- Assemble and turn the backpack and lining.
- Attach rings, sliders, and adjustable straps securely.
Fabric and sewing choices
The sample uses rustic cotton for the exterior and printed cotton for the lining. Choose a sturdy fabric such as canvas, denim, or corduroy, with interfacing and batting where indicated.
The back is quilted for padding. A walking foot can help feed the thick layers around the batting, zipper, and strap tabs.
Make it your own
Simplify the backpack by omitting one or both exterior pockets. Replace the metal flap closure with snaps or hook-and-loop tape.

Verified project scale
The measured plan uses 32 cm-wide main panels, a 40 cm-high back panel, and a 30 cm main zipper.
