What you’ll make

Sew the Felicia kids’ leotard in stretch fabric, with long sleeves, a round neckline, and a back neckline that sits slightly lower than the front.

This versatile base works for ballet, gymnastics, or skating. It can be worn alone or paired with the full circle skirt.

What you’ll learn in this class

  • Sew highly elastic fabric with stretch-compatible needles and stitches.
  • Attach the lining while controlling layers that stretch and shift.
  • Distribute elastic evenly around the leg openings.
  • Apply fold-over elastic to the neckline with gentle, balanced tension.
  • Assemble the shoulders and attach the sleeves by matching notches.
  • Finish small sleeve openings before closing the sleeve and side seams.

Fabric and notions

Use a highly elastic fabric such as Lycra. The project also uses a lining piece, elastic tape for the leg openings, and fold-over elastic, commonly called FOE, at the neckline.

Use a stretch, super-stretch, or comparable needle. Test the chosen zigzag or elastic stitch on a scrap because sewing machines can handle Lycra differently.

Make it your own

  • Keep the long sleeves, shorten them, or make the leotard sleeveless.
  • Lower or raise the neckline to change the look and coverage.
  • Finish the leg openings with FOE instead of elastic and a turned edge.
  • Add a skirt for a dance variation.
  • Use the basic leotard as a foundation for more elaborate designs.
