What you’ll make

Sew a flat fanny pack with a zippered main compartment and a separate pocket for keys or other small items. It holds everyday essentials such as a phone, wallet and keys.

The sample pairs a fabric front with a kraft-tex back for added body and durability where the pack may rub against clothing or the leg. A webbing strap and buckle complete the belt.

What you’ll learn in this class

  • Prepare the exterior and lining pieces.
  • Interface the fabric front for added body.
  • Create a clean welt opening for a zipper.
  • Use basting and a zipper foot to control multiple layers.
  • Construct two lined zippered compartments.
  • Handle kraft-tex without leaving unnecessary pinholes.
  • Insert the webbing and attach the buckle.

Fabric and structure

The demonstrated version uses an interfaced fabric front, lining for both compartments and kraft-tex on the back. Kraft-tex can remain smooth or be dampened and crumpled for a textured finish.

Canvas is recommended for a fabric exterior. Poplin can also be used, but the pattern recommends interfacing the exterior pieces to give the pack enough body.

Make it your own

Use kraft-tex on the back, or make the exterior from canvas or interfaced poplin. Coordinating or contrasting zippers offer another simple way to change the look.
