What you’ll make

The Joyce is a fully lined coat with front patch pockets, a collar with lapels and a buttoned front.

The standard length falls above the knee. Wear the lapels open or turn them up for more coverage around the neck.

What you’ll learn in this class

  • Stabilize curved and bias-cut edges.
  • Prepare and topstitch the patch pockets.
  • Set sleeves by matching the pattern notches.
  • Construct the collar and shape neat corners.
  • Assemble the lining, facings and outer coat.
  • Turn the coat through a sleeve opening.
  • Finish with optional topstitching, buttonholes and buttons.

Fabric and construction notes

Choose a warm coating fabric with enough body. Options include wool coating, bouclé, mouflon, corduroy, faux-fur-style fabric or another warm outerwear fabric.

You will also need lining. If the outer fabric is lightweight, use lightweight interfacing where extra support is needed.

Make it your own

  • Shorten or lengthen the above-the-knee coat.
  • Use two front buttons as shown or add more.
  • Add shoulder pads with help from the Nancy Blazer class.

For an unlined coat with a hood and zipper, see the Maggie Coat.

Sizing

The pattern covers grouped sizes 34/36 through 54/56. The chart spans an 86–132 cm bust, 64–110 cm waist and 90–136 cm hip.

Depending on size, the finished coat length ranges from 89 to 94 cm.

The class includes home-print A4 and copy-shop A0 patterns. For help with digital patterns, see How to Assemble PDF Sewing Patterns.
