In today’s tutorial, we’ll show you how to transform two patterns into something completely different: a kids’ one-piece jumpsuit made from a sweatshirt pattern and a pants pattern. Patterns included!

What you’ll make

Hack two children’s patterns into a long-sleeved, full-length jumpsuit with a back snap or hook-and-loop closure.

The featured superhero version adds an appliqué, removable cape, and elasticated boot covers. Without those details, the jumpsuit can become pajamas or everyday clothing.

What you’ll learn in these classes

  • Combine a raglan sweatshirt and sweatpants pattern.
  • Adapt the back opening, pants, pockets, and cuffs.
  • Sew a layered appliqué with zigzag stitching.
  • Join the top and pants with waist elastic.
  • Reinforce and install snaps or hook-and-loop tape.
  • Sew the optional cape and boot covers.

Choosing your fabric

Use a warm knit for pajamas or a soft one-piece outfit. The costume uses slightly stretchy costume fabric, while the cape and boot covers use a lightweight, nonfraying fabric.

Make it your own

Change the colors and appliqué for another character, or omit the costume pieces for pajamas or an everyday jumpsuit.

If the jumpsuit will be worn over clothing, make one size larger. Attach the cape with snaps, hook-and-loop tape, or ties.

See the women’s pinafore pattern hack or review how to use a PDF sewing pattern.

Sizing

The combined patterns cover sizes from 12–18 months through 5–6 years.

The two classes cover the jumpsuit hack and the optional costume pieces. The supplied files include both garment patterns and a separate cape-and-boots PDF.
