As soon as we released the girls’ pinafore a few weeks ago, you asked us for a women’s version—so today we’re making your request a reality! We’ll adapt our wide overalls pattern to create a women’s pinafore dress. You’ll be surprised by how easy it is to make with our step-by-step tutorial.

What you’ll make
Transform the Maxine loose-fit overalls bodice into a custom-length women’s pinafore dress with adjustable ring straps and a shaped back.
The sample has a center-front seam, gentle A-line shaping, contrasting upper facings, and two patch pockets adapted from the bomber jacket project.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Select the overalls bodice size from the bust measurement.
- Draft the dress to your chosen length.
- Calculate ease at the hip or widest point.
- Draw straight or gently A-line side seams.
- Modify the back and draft matching facings.
- Make adjustable long and short straps.
- Sew the optional center seam, pockets, and hem.
Fabric and sewing choices
The sample pairs corduroy with cotton facings. Fabric needs depend on the selected size, dress length, facing fabric, and pattern layout.
Finish drafting every piece before buying fabric. If the fabric has a directional print or nap, keep all pieces oriented consistently.
Make it your own
Keep the silhouette straight or add gentle flare and extra ease. Retain the original back shape or narrow or lower it for different coverage.
Adapt pockets from the women’s and kids’ bomber jacket, add one kangaroo pocket, or use concealed pockets inspired by the Marina skirt.
The center-front seam is optional. You can also change the hem length and strap width, matching the straps to the rings you select.
Drafting the fit
Draft the project from the wearer’s bust, waist, hip or widest-body circumference, and desired length. The class shows how to calculate ease before extending the bodice.
