What you’ll make

Sew loose-fit women’s overalls with wide legs, front and back bib sections, buttoned straps and optional back patch pockets. The roomy shape works well for everyday layering.

The demonstrated pair is full length with turned cuffs, but the hem is fitted after trying it on. The straps include two buttonholes for wearing the bib at different heights.

What you’ll learn in this class

  • Cut front and back trouser legs as mirrored pairs.
  • Sew, turn and reinforce the straps.
  • Prepare and topstitch optional patch pockets.
  • Assemble the legs, crotch seam and bib sections.
  • Finish curved arm openings with narrow double-fold hems.
  • Attach the straps and sew buttons by machine.
  • Make automatic buttonholes and fit the finished leg length.

Fabric choices

The sample uses lightweight, yarn-dyed gray fabric for transitional weather. The source also suggests knit fabric or viscose, depending on the drape and feel you want.

For winter, choose a heavier fabric with some drape. Interfacing can reinforce the strap areas where the buttonholes are sewn, especially when the main fabric is lightweight.

Make it your own

Add two pockets, one or none, change their shape or place them on the bib. Alter the strap width, add lace or replace the buttons with snaps, overall buckles or braided cord.

Make a shorts version in lightweight fabric for summer. Pair it with the elastic knit bandeau, or explore the baby overalls.

Alternative buttonhole methods appear in the stroller seat liner and BabyBjörn bouncer cover tutorials.

Pattern sizes

The pattern includes S, M, L and XL. Measurements are S: 66 cm waist, 96 cm hip, 88 cm bust; M: 70/100/92 cm; L: 74/104/96 cm; and XL: 78/108/100 cm.

A size M is sewn in class. The trouser legs are intentionally long, so check your preferred finished length before cutting and allow for your chosen hem or cuff.

The class is supported by downloadable A4 and A0 patterns and an information sheet with the verified size chart.
