Today we’re making baby overalls, and the pattern gives you two options: a short version for summer or a long version for winter. Cute, comfortable, and super easy to sew.

What you’ll make

Sew the Scout baby romper with short or full-length legs. Its roomy shape allows comfortable movement, while snap openings at one shoulder and along the inseam simplify dressing and diaper changes.

Rib-knit bands finish the neckline and leg openings. An optional patch pocket adds a playful detail and can hold a pacifier clip.

What you’ll learn in this class

  • Read the left- and right-shoulder markings before cutting.
  • Choose which shoulder is sewn and which receives snaps.
  • Reinforce snap areas on lightweight fabric.
  • Attach the front and back inseam facings evenly.
  • Finish the neckline and legs with stretch bands.
  • Sew stretch seams with a zigzag, elastic stitch, or serger.
  • Position matching snaps at the shoulder and inseam.

Fabric and notions

The sample uses knit fabric with rib knit at the neckline and leg openings. Woven fabric is also suitable; for that option, the instructor recommends cutting the inseam strips on the bias.

You’ll need snaps and knit interfacing to reinforce their placement. Use a ballpoint, stretch, or jersey needle when sewing knit fabric.

Make it your own

Choose short or full-length legs before cutting. Add the pocket to the front or back, change its position, or omit it. You may also choose which shoulder has the snap opening.

Create a coordinated accessory with the Celtic knot headband.

Sizing

The pattern includes 3/6, 6/9, 9/12, 12/18, and 18/24 months, plus 2/3 years. It covers heights from 65 to 92 cm and provides waist and hip measurements.

The revised class includes the short and full-length options in one pattern. For preparation help, see how to use a PDF sewing pattern.
