What you’ll make

Sew roomy Bermuda-style swim trunks for kids, designed for comfortable movement at the pool or beach.

The Tarifa trunks have an elastic waistband, an optional drawstring, and up to two back patch pockets. A brief-style inner liner can also be omitted.

What you’ll learn in this class

Cut mirrored front and back pieces accurately.
Prepare and position optional back patch pockets.
Assemble the rise, side seams, and inseam.
Finish seams with a serger, zigzag, or overlock-style stitch.
Construct the brief-style liner and apply its elastic.
Attach the liner and form the waistband casing.
Hem the legs and add an optional drawstring.

Fabric and supplies

The demonstrated outer fabric is Tactel, a durable, quick-drying fabric suited to swimwear. You will also need lining fabric and elastic for the liner and waistband.

If adding the tie, use cord and eyelets. A Microtex or stretch needle can help prevent skipped stitches while sewing the liner elastic.

Make it your own

Choose two back pockets, one, or none. The elastic waistband works without a cord, so the tie and eyelets are optional.

Use a short decorative cord between the eyelets or thread a functional cord around the waist. Check the leg length on the child before sewing the final hems.

The included pattern covers ages 2 through 15 and is formatted for home printing on A4 paper.
