What you’ll make
Sew the Lexie, a breezy children’s knit tank top with a playful knot at the center front.
The standard length sits just above the pants while still covering the stomach. Bound armholes and neckline give the sleeveless top a clean, flexible finish.
The design is simple enough for newer sewists and offers a practical introduction to sewing stretch fabric on a domestic machine.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Cut the front and back pieces on the fold.
- Select a ballpoint or stretch needle.
- Sew knit seams with a stretch-friendly finish.
- Distribute the neck and armhole bands evenly.
- Topstitch the bindings so they stay flat.
- Test and sew optional decorative stitches.
Fabric choice
Choose a knit fabric with at least some stretch. The sample uses a soft gradient denim knit, but another suitable knit may be used.
A walking foot can help feed the layers evenly. Without a serger, finish the seams with a zigzag or another stretch-compatible machine stitch.
Make it your own
Shorten the body for a crop-top version, or keep the original length for more coverage. Decorative stitching along the armhole bands can add detail to a plain fabric.
Add a contrasting or lace-trimmed pocket using one of the included templates. The templates offer several shapes and may be adjusted to suit the project.
