What you’ll make

Sew a loose, flowing Maó swing dress for a child or an adult. The pattern includes short- and long-sleeve options for a comfortable style that works across seasons.

Make coordinating dresses, or use the same fabric for different garments to create a matching family look.

What you’ll learn in this class

Read mirrored pieces, fold lines, grainlines, and sleeve notches.
Join the shoulders and attach sleeves to a stretch garment.
Choose a ballpoint or jersey needle for knit fabric.
Manage fine knits with a walking foot.
Finish stretch seams with a serger, zigzag, or overcasting foot.
Hem sleeves with a stretch stitch or twin needle.
Divide and attach the neckband evenly.

Fabric and finish

Choose fabric containing spandex so the dress stretches when it is pulled on and off. The class uses lightweight, fluid modal and also shows a child’s version in knit fabric.

If the fabric does not fray, the lower edge may be left raw, serged, or hemmed. Remember that adding a hem will shorten the finished dress.

Make it your own

Check the length against the wearer before cutting. Add length for a maternity version, shorten it if preferred, or wear the finished dress with a belt to define the waist.

Complete the look with a Celtic knot headband, buttonless knit cardigan, or batwing jacket.

Sizing

The files cover women’s sizes S, M, L, and XL. Children’s sizing runs from 0/3 months through 12/13 years and is divided between baby and kids’ patterns.
