What you’ll make
Sew the Mark, a children’s knit tank top with a surfer-inspired shape, low open armholes, and a fitted back.
The sample combines colorful front strips with matching neck and armhole bands for a playful summer finish.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Cut the front and back correctly on the fold.
- Add decorative knit strips with straight or zigzag stitching.
- Join stretch fabric with a flexible seam finish.
- Distribute neck and armhole bands evenly around curves.
- Choose a clean band finish or an exposed casual finish.
- Hem knit fabric with a stretch twin needle or flexible stitch.
Fabric and tools
Use a stretchy knit for the tank and knit scraps for the contrasting details. The class uses a fine jersey needle and recommends testing the stitching on a scrap first.
A stretch twin needle creates two parallel rows on the right side of the hem and a flexible zigzag underneath.
Make it your own
Move, resize, or omit the front strips, or replace them with a small pocket. Finish the bands conventionally or leave their edges exposed for the sample’s casual look.
Pair the tank with the Lucas shorts or the Sarah skirt.
Pattern sizing
The included pattern covers children’s sizes from 2–3 years through 12–13 years.
The video compares two band finishes and shows practical ways to sew the knit seams and hem on a regular sewing machine. A downloadable pattern is included.
