What you’ll make

This basic men’s tank top has an open neckline, bound armholes, and a straight hem. It is a practical warm-weather project for learning to sew knit garments.

The front and back are cut on the fold. Separate bands finish the neckline and armholes using rib knit or the same knit as the body.

What you’ll learn in this class

  • Select a suitable needle and stitch for jersey.
  • Join the knit shoulder and side seams.
  • Distribute the neckline band using reference points.
  • Fit a shorter band without distorting the neckline.
  • Apply the armhole bands before closing the sides.
  • Choose stretch-compatible finishes for the bands and hem.

Fabric choices

Use a T-shirt-weight knit for the body. Make the neckline and armhole bands from rib knit or from the same fabric when it has enough stretch.

The class uses a ballpoint or jersey needle. Seams can be sewn with a stretch stitch or zigzag, or finished with a serger.

Make it your own

Combine colors between the body and bands, use a print, or add a chest pocket, appliqué, or decorative bands across the front.

The children’s Mark Tank Top shows the chest-band idea.

Pair the tank with Tampa Shorts or Derek Shorts for a coordinated handmade set.

Pattern sizing

The graded pattern covers sizes 34/36 through 54/56. Files are available for A4 home printing and A0 large-format printing.

The video demonstrates band distribution, knit-friendly stitching, armhole finishing, side-seam assembly, and hemming with the included pattern.
