What you’ll make
Create a hanging panda growth chart with an appliquéd face, padded ears and feather, decorative trim and chalkboard-fabric circles for the numbers.
The numbers can be erased and rewritten as you reposition the chart higher on the wall.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Prepare mirrored letters and motifs with fusible appliqué web.
- Finish appliqué pieces with a controlled zigzag.
- Attach chalkboard fabric without leaving pinholes.
- Sew, trim and turn padded ears and a feather.
- Machine-stitch the panda’s decorative mouth.
- Secure the ears, feather and hanging loop at the top.
Fabric and supplies
The project uses woven fabrics, chalkboard fabric, fusible interfacing and small pieces of batting. Buttons, fringe and ribbon complete the demonstrated panda.
Make it your own
- Add a child’s name with fusible appliqué letters.
- Change the face, mouth, trim and hanging ribbon.
- Replace the chalkboard circles with sewn numbers.
Chalkboard fabric can also add a reusable number panel to the reversible birthday crown.
Measurement details
The demonstrated scale spaces its marks 5 cm apart and alternates longer and shorter appliqué lines.
The video is accompanied by a downloadable pattern for the panda design.
