What you’ll make

Sew the Phoenix T-Shirt, an oversized men’s knit top with short sleeves, generous armholes and the relaxed feel of a lightweight sweatshirt.

Rib-knit bands finish the crew neckline, armholes and lower edge, giving the loose body a structured finish.

Pair it with the Tampa Shorts or Derek Shorts.

For a more basic alternative, try the Basic Men’s T-Shirt.

What you’ll learn in this class

  • Cut the front and back on the fold and transfer the notches.
  • Choose suitable needles and stitches for knit fabrics.
  • Join the shoulders and close the body with stretch-friendly stitching.
  • Prepare the rib-knit bands with their finished edges facing outward.
  • Match notches and stretch the armhole bands evenly while sewing.
  • Quarter the neckline and hem bands for balanced distribution.
  • Topstitch the bands for a flatter, decorative finish.

Fabric choices

French terry gives the body the structured, sweatshirt-like look shown in class. Rib knit is used for the neckline, armholes and hem band.

A lighter summer knit creates a softer result with more drape and less body. Use a ballpoint, jersey, stretch or super-stretch needle suited to the selected knit.

Make it your own

  • Add an optional patch pocket from another suitable pattern.
  • Use a contrasting fabric or color for the pocket or bands.
  • Wear the men’s pattern as an oversized women’s top.
  • Add single-needle or twin-needle topstitching beside the bands.

Pattern sizing

The pattern covers grouped sizes 34/36 through 54/56. Its chart spans bust measurements of 86–132 cm, waists of 64–110 cm and hips of 90–136 cm.

The video class includes downloadable A4 and A0 patterns and a pattern information sheet.
