What you’ll make

Sew a straight-fit raglan sweatshirt for a child or woman, finished with a stretch neckband, sleeve cuffs and waistband.

Raglan seams run from the neckline to the underarm, making this a practical introduction to assembling a knit garment with sleeves.

Make coordinating versions in the same fabric or give each sweatshirt its own combination of body fabric and rib-knit trim.

What you’ll learn in this class

  • Label pattern pieces with size, grainline, fold and reference marks.
  • Cut mirrored raglan sleeves and identify their front edges.
  • Join raglan seams and finish stretch fabric.
  • Quarter a neckline and distribute a smaller neckband evenly.
  • Attach a stretch waistband and sleeve cuffs.
  • Manage small cuff openings and thick seam intersections.

Fabric

Use a knit with suitable stretch. The demonstrated sweatshirt uses warm fleece-backed knit with rib knit at the neck, cuffs and waistband.

A lighter or less sporty knit creates more of a sweater look. Use a ballpoint, jersey or stretch needle; a walking foot can help feed the layers evenly.

Make it your own

The pattern has a straight fit and is not especially roomy. If you prefer more ease, the source recommends going up one size.

For an oversized shape with a hood or neckband option, see the Unisex Sweatshirt.

Pattern sizes

The children’s pattern covers 12/18 months through 9/10 years. The women’s pattern includes S, M, L and XL.

The video class includes separate downloadable patterns for children and women.
