What you’ll make

Sew the Robbins, a comfortable long-sleeved baby and toddler romper in stretch knit. Overlapping neckline tabs fasten with snaps, opening the neck to make dressing easier.

Snaps along the crotch allow diaper changes without removing the whole garment. Rib-knit cuffs and bindings provide the stretch needed at the wrists, legs and neckline.

What you’ll learn in this class

  • Cut full garment pieces correctly on the fabric fold.
  • Sew stretch knit with a ballpoint, jersey or stretch needle.
  • Attach rib-knit cuffs while distributing the stretch evenly.
  • Construct the overlapping neckline and finish it with rib binding.
  • Use zigzag, overcasting or an overlocker to retain seam elasticity.
  • Finish the crotch opening and install matching snap components.

Fabric and materials

The romper requires a stretch knit. The sample uses rainbow jersey, with rib knit for the cuffs and binding because rib knit stretches readily.

If you use the main jersey for the cuffs instead, the class recommends adding a couple of centimeters to the cuff pattern pieces so they are easier to stretch into place.

Make it your own

Choose whether the back or front crotch extension overlaps on top when fastened. On a larger size, you can also add another neckline snap if needed for suitable spacing.

Complete a coordinating baby set with the cozy reversible baby booties, which can be made with a warm sherpa lining.

Sizes

The Robbins pattern runs from 0–3 months through 3–4 years.
