What you’ll make

Sew an oversized round bag with a full lining, long webbing straps, and a cord-and-button closure. Its roomy circular body accommodates beach or pool essentials.

The burlap version has a rustic finish and room for a towel, wrap, sandals, and a clear vinyl toiletry bag.

What you’ll learn in this class

  • Draft and cut circles using a measured radius.
  • Position and reinforce webbing straps.
  • Add decorative strap tabs with a triple zigzag.
  • Secure the edges of a heavily fraying fabric.
  • Sew smooth circular exterior and lining seams.
  • Join, turn, and finish a fully lined bag.
  • Add a cord loop and button closure.

Fabric and notions

The class uses burlap outside and solid cotton inside. Because burlap frays readily, its seams need a secure finish.

The PDF recommends canvas or another thick, durable exterior fabric. If you use lighter poplin, interface the exterior to give it more body.

For winter, try corduroy, flannel, or coating fabric. The pictured winter version combines patterned coating fabric with a printed poplin lining.

Make it your own

Stencil the broad circular face with fabric paint, or leave it plain. You can also add interior pockets before assembling the bag.

Adjust the scale to suit what you carry. For a hand-carried version, replace the long webbing straps with rounded faux-leather handles.

Finished size

The finished bag measures approximately 48 cm in diameter. The PDF specifies two 70 cm webbing straps for the shoulder-carry version.

The class includes a PDF with cutting measurements, a strap-tab pattern, and fabric guidance.
