What you’ll make
Sew elastic-waist shorts with a wrap-style front panel that ties at the side, creating the appearance of a skirt from the front.
The featured version has gathered ruffles along the curved panel and leg hems. The pattern also works with fewer ruffles or none at all.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Stabilize the waist and curved edges.
- Prepare ruffle strips with narrow hems.
- Gather ruffles evenly to fit the pattern edges.
- Assemble the shorts and align the ruffled hems.
- Attach the wrap panel and side ties.
- Construct the casing and insert waistband elastic.
Fabric options
Poplin provides a crisp, easy-to-press result. Viscose creates more fluid movement, while linen and other lightweight summer wovens are also suitable.
A knit can create a different look, although the class notes that it may be less straightforward to press and sew than a stable woven.
Make it your own
Add ruffles to both the wrap panel and leg hems, use them only at the hems, or omit them. Leave off the front panel to make simple shorts.
If you omit the hem ruffles and want more coverage, lengthen the shorts before applying a standard hem.
For other silhouettes, see the Valencia Shorts and Marina Skirt.
Pattern sizing
The pattern runs from 34/36 through 54/56, covering waists of 64–110 cm and hips of 90–136 cm.
Finished length ranges from 35 to 40 cm by size. Home-print A4 and copy-shop A0 patterns are included.
The video and included patterns cover the shorts, wrap panel, ties, waistband, and optional ruffles.
