What you’ll make
The Sofia is a softly draped dress with an underbust seam, gathered skirt, sleeves, and a buttoned upper bodice.
Underbust elastic helps the dress adapt as body measurements change. The button opening provides nursing access, although the design is not limited to maternity wear.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Cut mirrored and fold-cut pieces and interface the button area.
- Attach a stretch neckline band around the front opening.
- Set the sleeves and sew the bodice using knit-friendly methods.
- Distribute underbust elastic evenly before joining the skirt.
- Gather the skirt when making the version without elastic.
- Sew buttonholes, place the buttons, and finish the hems.
Fabric and sewing setup
The sample uses viscose with spandex. Choose a fabric with some stretch, fluid drape, and movement; modal or another drapey knit is also suggested.
Use a fine ballpoint, jersey, stretch, or super-stretch needle suited to the fabric. A serger is optional because the class also explains regular-machine methods.
Make it your own
Choose long or short sleeves, adjust the skirt from knee to ankle length, or shorten the design into a top. Finish the underbust seam with elastic or gathering alone.
Complete the look with the Celtic knot headband.
Pattern sizing
The included pattern covers sizes 36 through 54. The class highlights the bust as the key measurement and discusses how fabric stretch and the underbust finish affect fit.
This intermediate class includes the dress video lesson and a downloadable PDF pattern.
