What you’ll make

The Teddy is a baby romper with a lined sleeveless bodice, a softly gathered lower section, and elasticized leg openings.

Snaps close the back and crotch. The crotch opening allows diaper changes without removing the entire romper.

The pattern works with woven or knit fabric, with different leg-edge finishes to suit the fabric’s stretch.

What you’ll learn in this class

  • Cut folded and mirrored pieces for the lined bodice.
  • Reinforce the back and crotch closure areas.
  • Finish the neckline and armholes with enclosed seams.
  • Join the bodice side seams through both layers.
  • Apply bias strips to woven leg openings.
  • Gather the lower romper evenly to fit the bodice.
  • Make elastic leg casings and install snaps.

Fabric and materials

The sample is made from lightweight muslin. Both woven and knit fabrics are suitable, but the leg-edge finish changes with the fabric’s stretch.

For woven fabric, cut the leg-opening strips on the bias. Knit leg openings may be turned directly, resulting in a slightly smaller finished opening.

Lightweight fusible interfacing reinforces the closure areas. Knit fabric can instead be strengthened with an extra strip of the same fabric.

Make it your own

The reinforced back can be finished with snaps or buttons. The demonstrated crotch closure uses snaps, and the number needed may vary by size.

Choose lightweight muslin or another suitable woven or knit, then use the class finish for that fabric type.

Complete the outfit with a matching Celtic knot headband.
