What you’ll make

Sew the Tiana, a sleeveless stretch-knit top that looks simple from the front and reveals an overlapping, open-back design when you turn around.

A round neckline and armhole bands give it a sporty finish. The overlapping back panels create movement, while darts or gathers shape them at the side seams.

Designed with activewear in mind, the top can also become a casual everyday piece when sewn in a suitable knit.

What you’ll learn in this class

  • Prepare mirrored back pieces and finish their curved edges.
  • Overlap the upper back accurately using the pattern notches.
  • Sew stretch-knit seams with a sewing machine or serger.
  • Apply a neckband in the round while distributing its stretch evenly.
  • Attach shaped armhole bands before closing the side seams.
  • Shape the back with darts or controlled gathers.
  • Use stretch-compatible topstitching where needed.

Fabric choices

Use a stretch knit. Lycra supports the original activewear look, while other knit fabrics can give the same design a more casual or polished feel.

The class explains how to select a jersey, stretch or super-stretch needle to suit your fabric.

Make it your own

  • Leave the lower back open or add a short line of stitching to limit the opening.
  • Press the back darts upward or downward, or replace them with gathers.
  • Topstitch the neckline and armholes with a stitch that retains the needed stretch.

For a coordinated workout set, pair it with the Sport Leggings or the Atlanta Sport Skort.

Pattern sizing

The pattern covers grouped sizes 34/36, 38/40, 42/44, 46/48, 50/52 and 54/56.

The body chart spans a bust of 86–132 cm, waist of 64–110 cm and hips of 90–136 cm. The finished top length ranges from 59 cm to 64 cm by size.

The video class includes downloadable Tiana patterns in A4 home-print and A0 copy-shop formats.
