What you’ll make
Sew a pull-on turban hat with soft gathering at the front and back and a separate front band that conceals the gathered join.
The design is available for babies, children, teens, and adults. Make it as an outfit accessory or a comfortable stretch covering for your hair.
For a coordinated baby outfit, pair it with the Newborn Wrap Top.
Adult versions can coordinate with the Lisbon Dress or Nancy Blazer.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Sew stretch fabric with a jersey or stretch needle.
- Finish the face opening with overcasting and an elastic hem stitch.
- Form the repeated folds that create the gathered shape.
- Control bulky seam allowances while stitching the folds.
- Adjust the gathering and secure it with the front band.
- Turn the band so the final join is concealed.
Fabric
Use a knit with enough stretch to pull over the head and recover comfortably. Jersey and French terry are demonstrated; a warmer stretch knit can also be used.
Cut the main piece in the direction of greatest stretch. Do not use non-stretch fabric for this pattern.
Stretch microfiber is another option for wearing the turban while sleeping to protect curly hair and help reduce frizz.
Make it your own
- Add a small or large bow at the front.
- Tighten or relax the gathering before securing the band.
- Choose a light jersey or warmer stretch knit.
- Use matching fabric to coordinate it with another handmade garment.
Sizes and fit
Sizes cover 0–3, 3–6, and 6–12 months; 1–2, 3–6, 6–10, and 11–15 years; and adult M and L.
Head-circumference ranges run from 33–36 cm in the smallest baby size to 58–60 cm in adult L.
