What you’ll make
This unisex work smock has a lapel-style collar, center-front button closure, sleeves and two large patch pockets.
It is a practical work layer for teachers or anyone whose profession calls for a protective smock.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Choose a size for a unisex fit.
- Stabilize curved and bias-cut edges.
- Prepare and position large patch pockets.
- Set sleeves by matching the pattern notches.
- Sew the sleeve and side seams.
- Construct and attach the collar and front facings.
- Finish the hems, buttonholes and buttons.
Fabric choices
Printed poplin and gingham are shown for the work-smock version. Interfacing supports the collar and front facings.
For a shirtdress, choose a lightweight fabric with drape, such as viscose.

- Go up one size for a looser fit or two for an oversized fit.
- Make short sleeves, add elastic cuffs or shorten it into a shirt.

Sizing
The pattern covers grouped sizes 34/36 through 54/56. Choose mainly by bust, or by hip if your hip falls in a larger size.
The chart spans an 82–130 cm bust, 66–114 cm waist and 78–126 cm hip. Finished lengths range from 89 to 96.5 cm.
The class includes home-print A4 and copy-shop A0 pattern files for every listed size.
