What you’ll make

Sew the Will swim trunks, a lined shorts-style swimsuit with side pockets and an elastic waistband.

Eyelets and a drawstring provide extra adjustment at the waist. The design is suited to swimming and comfortable warm-weather wear.

What you’ll learn in this class

  • Cut mirrored pieces and identify the front and back.
  • Finish lining edges with fold-over elastic.
  • Build the side pockets without closing their openings.
  • Assemble the rise, inseam and side seams.
  • Install eyelets or make buttonholes for the drawstring.
  • Attach the waistband and lining while leaving access for the elastic.
  • Insert elastic and a drawstring, then finish the leg hems.

Fabric and notions

The demonstrated outer fabric is Tactel, paired with an interior lining and mesh pocket bags. The project also uses waistband elastic, fold-over elastic and a drawstring.

A stretch or super-stretch needle is used in the class. Choose stitches and seam finishes suited to the stretch in your fabrics.

Make it your own

Lengthen the pattern for a Bermuda-style leg or shorten it for briefer trunks. Account for the 3 cm hem allowance when changing the finished length.

Eyelets are optional. Machine-sewn buttonholes can provide openings for the drawstring instead.

Pair the trunks with the basic men’s T-shirt, using matching fabric for its pocket. See how to assemble a PDF sewing pattern.

Sizing

The pattern covers sizes 36/38 through 52/54. The chart spans waist measurements of 70–110 cm and hip measurements of 82–122 cm.

Use both waist and hip measurements when choosing a size. The pattern also provides size-specific elastic and drawstring lengths.

The video class includes A4 and A0 patterns plus a project-information PDF with measurements and material guidance.
