This Christmas, we suggest making the gifts for the little ones in your family extra crafty. Handmade gifts, made with love, that will be unique and that they’ll enjoy immensely. Are you up for it? Here are lots of ideas:

The scooter/bike backpack

This bag could be the best gift you can give them. They love riding their bike or scooter everywhere, so what could be better than sewing them a backpack where they can carry all their things and hang it from the handlebars so it doesn’t get in the way while they ride?

You can make it to match, using the same colors, with a super-fun printed fabric, or with laminated fabric to make it even more durable… However you like!

Dinosaur/dragon costume

On one side, the dinosaur/dragon crown, and on the other, the super Velcro tail. No little one can resist this incredibly cool costume, and dinosaurs, dragons, and fantasy are so fascinating to them. So get to work and sew them a set—or several!

You can modify the shape a little and vary the fabrics, so they won’t just have a dinosaur costume—they can have costumes for several species.

If your little adventurer isn’t really into dinosaurs but does love costumes, we have plenty more ideas, both in Lulu Ferris and on our YouTube channel. There are fabric wings, the eye mask, the cape, and so on.

Teepee for kids

teepee for kids DIY toys

What child doesn’t like hiding in their teepee? It can be their secret hideout, play area, or a place to get together with their friends. It isn’t very difficult to sew, although you will need quite a bit of fabric for this project. You can use a single fabric, as we did, or combine several. Use your imagination and creativity, and go for it, because this really is a fantastic Three Kings or Santa gift.

Also, if you want to complete the gift, you can make them the Native American costume, so in addition to the feather crown and vest, they’ll have their own hideout in the purest Indigenous style.

Chalkboard notebook with a pocket for chalk

For the most creative little ones, who love to draw.

A notebook with chalkboard pages and a pocket for storing chalk and an eraser, perfect for taking with them when they go out. The endless notebook can be drawn on and erased; the pages never run out. They can make a racetrack and keep a couple of tiny cars in the chalk pocket to have races.

It has handles so it’s easier to carry. If they like drawing, this gift is perfect.

Roll-up pencil case (YouTube)

They like to draw, they have a thousand colors, markers, pencils… and everything is disorganized? This is the solution. A roll-up pencil case for storing all their colors; you can make the slots wider to hold an eraser or pencil sharpener. It rolls up and has a ribbon closure. One option is to fill it with chalk and pair it with the roll-up portable chalkboard!

We designed it with an upper flap so the pencils don’t fall out when it’s being carried :)

And that’s it for a few ideas for making handmade gifts for the little ones at home. In Lulu Ferris, you’ll find many more tutorials for making and giving gifts, games, accessories… I’m sure you’ll find something among the more than 180 tutorials we have :)

Happy Sewing!
