5 Original Garlands to Make at Home

If you’re a regular Lulu Ferris follower, there’s something you already know about us: we’re crazy about garlands, we love them, and we never get tired of them! So we’re always looking for new ways to create original garlands that add a very special touch to our home, the shop, or any event we organize. Today we went looking for a few new ideas to add to others we’ve already shared with you, but you may not remember. We ended up gathering no fewer than 5 beautiful, original garlands to make at home, with different levels of difficulty and effort.

You already know that garlands are on trend, both in interior and exterior decorating and at all kinds of events. Whatever the occasion you want to celebrate or the room you want to decorate, you’re sure to find one among these ten that’s perfect.

1. Garland with fabric strips

We’ve told you thousands of times not to throw away the little pieces of fabric left over from your projects. The truth is, you’ll need quite a lot for this beautiful garland, and it might be easier to buy a couple of fat quarters that coordinate with each other, cut them into strips, and tie them to the garland string. Just look at this beauty we found on Liz Marie Blog, used as a bed headboard!

2. Garland with fluffy hearts

One of the first projects we teach the girls who come to our introductory sewing machine class is making these fluffy shapes—hearts, stars, and so on—that we often use as pincushions or hanging decorations. But why settle for hanging just one when we can put several on a garland and get a result as beautiful and soft as this one from Nana Company? 3. Crochet garland

Why not? Who says garlands have to be made exclusively of fabric or paper? If crochet is your thing, you can make some truly beautiful things too. And if you’re not convinced, take a look at the example in the photo, from the Petals to Picots website. Play with shapes and colors, imagine, experiment, get yourself some beautiful yarn, and put your wrist to work.

4. Garland with wool tassels 

And what are tassels? Simply these little octopuses you see in the photo, which are so easy to make that they’re a wonderful craft to do with your kids at home, letting them help make your home a more beautiful place. They’re also a very fitting decoration for their room, thanks to the naïve, messy touch that gives them their charm. You’ll find photos of the process in this link.

5. Cascade garlands

And to take things a step further, if we want to make truly original garlands, we can simply break the concept of a garland. Don’t worry, it won’t be painful: instead of imagining them as something horizontal, hung from two sides, imagine them as something vertical, hanging from the ceiling to the floor. Of all the cascade garlands we’ve seen online, this one struck us as wonderfully beautiful. For this type, it’s best to use heavy-weight paper, plastic, beads, or, why not, fabric too.
