Adele Shirt
In today’s sewing class, I’ll show you how to sew a loose-fitting, long-sleeved shirt with a pocket and button-front closure. Patterns included!

What you’ll make
The Adele is a loose, slightly long shirt with full-length sleeves, a shirt collar and stand, cuffs, a front button placket, and a patch pocket.
Its relaxed shape can be worn loose, tucked in, or tied. The pattern can also be lengthened into a shirt dress.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Staystitch curved areas so the fabric keeps its shape.
- Apply interfacing to the collar, cuffs, and button placket.
- Prepare and topstitch a patch pocket.
- Bind the sleeve openings before constructing the cuffs.
- Set sleeves by matching the single and double notches.
- Build and attach the collar and collar stand.
- Finish the hem, buttonholes, and buttons.
The project is not especially difficult, but newer sewists may want more practice before tackling the collar, cuffs, and buttonholes.
Fabric choices
The tutorial uses soft, fluid viscose. Poplin creates a crisper shirt, while denim works for a denim-shirt version and flannel suits colder weather.
Match the needle and interfacing to your fabric. Add more interfacing when you want a firmer collar or cuffs.
Make it your own
Lengthen the body pieces to turn Adele into a shirt dress. For a more oversized look, the original page suggests choosing one or two sizes larger.
Add one pocket, two pockets, or none. You can also reposition the pocket and adjust the number or placement of the buttons and cuff closures.
