What you’ll make
The Ávila Apron combines a gathered skirt, bib, neck ties, waistband ties and two curved pockets for a dress-like silhouette.
Make the full bib apron for an adult or child, or omit the bib and sew the gathered skirt section as a waist apron.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Stabilize waistband pieces so they do not stretch out of shape.
- Shape curved patch-pocket edges with gathering stitches and pressing.
- Reinforce the upper corners of the pockets.
- Sew and turn neat neck ties and assemble the lined bib.
- Gather the skirt evenly and align it with the waistband.
- Enclose the bib and gathered skirt in a cleanly finished waistband.
Fabric and appliqué
Use a woven fabric you enjoy. Avoid very thick fabric unless your machine can handle the combined layers at the gathers and waistband; a walking foot may help.
The demonstrated appliqués use double-sided fusible web. Stitch around appliqués on an item that will be washed, even if the adhesive is described as permanent.
Make it your own
Leave the apron plain, add flower appliqués or create a name, cooking phrase or vegetable motifs. Straight, zigzag or decorative topstitching can personalize the pockets and waistband.
- Explore the craft apron.
- Try the short apron.
- Make the teacher’s tabard.
- See the Rudolph apron.
Pattern sizing
The pattern includes 2–6 years, 6–12 years and adult sizes S, M, L and XL.
Across the full range, it covers waist measurements of 52–110 cm and chest measurements of 55–132 cm.
The class includes apron patterns for home printing on A4 sheets and print-shop output on A0 paper.
