What you’ll make

Sew the Elsa, a fully lined coat-style cape with a round stand collar and practical openings that free your arms while preserving the cape silhouette.

Raglan-style panels and shoulder darts shape the upper body. The featured closure is a separate tab with two buttonholes that fastens to buttons on the cape.

What you’ll learn in this class

Sew shoulder darts in the outer fabric and lining.
Assemble the panels while leaving arm openings.
Join and turn the lining for clean openings and hems.
Stabilize curves and loosely woven fabric.
Construct and attach the round stand collar.
Make the buttonhole tab and position its buttons.

Fabric and lining

Choose a warm outer fabric suitable for a coat or jacket, such as coating, flannel, corduroy or bouclé. The sample uses a warm Cheviot-style fabric.

The sample is lined with poplin, which is easy to sew. Traditional lining fabric also works, while stay tape can stabilize curved or bias areas in a loose weave.

Interfacing supports the closure tab and helps its buttonholes retain their shape.

Make it your own

Use the buttonhole tab shown in class, substitute a toggle or another jacket fastening, or choose a simple button closure. You can also adjust the closure position.

Sizes and length

The pattern covers grouped sizes 34/36 through 54/56. The chart spans bust measurements of 86–132 cm, waists of 64–110 cm and hips of 90–136 cm.

Finished cape length ranges from 81 cm in size 34/36 to 86 cm in size 54/56.

The video class comes with A4 and A0 pattern files and an information file containing the size chart.
