What you’ll make

Sew the Erika, a roomy short-sleeve T-shirt with a crew neckline and a fluid, comfortable shape. The sample has small side slits, which you may omit.

The pattern includes an optional patch pocket. Wear the finished top alone or layer it under the Betty Overalls.

What you’ll learn in this class

  • Choose suitable needles and stitches for knit fabric.
  • Divide and match the neckline and neckband.
  • Stretch the shorter neckband evenly while sewing.
  • Set short sleeves into open armholes.
  • Finish seams with an overlocker, zigzag or stretch stitch.
  • Sew side slits and finish the hems.

Choosing fabric

For the soft result shown, choose jersey or another fluid knit. Test the needle and stitch on a scrap, especially with a slippery or unfamiliar fabric.

A drapey woven such as viscose or gauze can also work. With woven fabric, cut the neckline strip on the bias so it can follow the curve.

Make it your own

Add the included pocket or leave the front plain. Sew the side seams fully closed for a classic T-shirt, or keep the small slits demonstrated in the class.

You can also lengthen the pattern into a T-shirt dress. For a sleeveless alternative, see the Basic Tank Top.

Pattern sizes

The pattern includes sizes 36 through 50. If digital patterns are new to you, the PDF pattern tutorial explains how to assemble and use them.
