What you’ll make
Sew the Betty, ’70s-inspired overalls with a high rise and wide, slightly flared legs that finish around the ankle.
The design includes a front bib, shoulder straps, buttoned side openings, side pockets and optional back patch pockets.
For simpler options, compare the Maxine Loose-Fit Overalls and Grey Overalls.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Test needles and stitches on denim.
- Sew and topstitch straps, bib sections and pockets.
- Assemble the trouser fronts, backs and side pieces.
- Finish the bib and upper edges with facings.
- Reinforce seams and side openings with topstitching.
- Make buttonholes and install jeans buttons.
Choosing fabric
Denim is recommended for the structured silhouette shown. The sample has a small amount of elastane, so the class compares needle options on a scrap before sewing.
Corduroy is another suggested choice. A drapier fabric can be used, but it will produce a different silhouette.
Make it your own
Keep the ankle length, extend the legs or shorten the pattern for summer overalls. Leave enough fabric for your chosen hem.
The back pockets are optional and can be positioned for the wearer. You can also adjust the straps and choose the placement of buttons at the side openings.
Layer Betty over the Basic Tank Top.
Pattern sizes
The pattern includes sizes 36 through 50. The PDF sewing pattern tutorial explains how to assemble and interpret digital patterns.
A printable PDF pattern is included for the Betty Overalls.
