What you’ll make

The Faro is a sleeveless children’s dress with a simple bodice and a gathered tiered skirt. The featured two-tier version is adapted from the existing Mark T-Shirt pattern.

Bindings finish the neckline and armholes. Add more tiers to change the skirt length and create a longer dress.

What you’ll learn in this class

  • Adapt the Mark T-Shirt pattern into a dress bodice.
  • Plan the height, fullness, and number of skirt tiers.
  • Allow for the hem on the lowest tier.
  • Apply knit neckline and armhole bindings.
  • Gather each tier to fit the section above.
  • Distribute gathers and align tier seams.

Fabric choices

Jersey knit is recommended and used for the sample. Cut the neckline and armhole strips from the same fabric or a coordinating knit.

Nonstretch woven fabric is possible, but the neckline must pass comfortably over the head. Cut woven bindings on the bias and make them long enough to fit the adjusted edges.

Make it your own

Change the tier height, fullness, and number to control the dress length and amount of gathering. Add more tiers for a floor-length version or use fewer for a shorter summer dress.

The class also covers raising the low armholes and adjusting the neckline or open back. Match armhole changes on the front and back, then adjust the binding lengths.

Test substantial bodice changes before cutting the final fabric.

Other dress options include the Lisboa Dress and Maó Dress.

Pattern sizing

The included Mark T-Shirt base pattern covers ages 2/3 through 12/13 and is supplied in A4 format. The class shows how to draft skirt tiers for the selected bodice size and desired length.

The video demonstrates the bodice adaptation, tier planning, gathering, binding, and dress assembly using the included Mark T-Shirt pattern.
