What you’ll make

Sew the Girona, a structured two-in-one design that switches between a shoulder bag and a backpack using webbing straps and swivel hooks.

It has a zippered pocket in the front flap, a large pocket beneath the flap, a rear zipper opening into the main compartment, and a lining pocket for smaller belongings.

What you’ll learn in this class

Stabilize the bag pieces and control fraying fabric.
Install a zipper in the front-flap opening.
Add a magnetic closure and align its parts.
Assemble the front, back, base, sides, and lining.
Reinforce webbing handles and strap anchors.
Join bulky layers around the upper corners.
Make adjustable straps with sliders and swivel hooks.

Fabric and structure

A sturdy canvas is recommended for the exterior, with lightweight poplin or quilting cotton for the lining. The pattern identifies the pieces that need batting or interfacing.

The class uses fusible batting. Regular batting can be basted to the fabric, while firmer batting or interfacing can produce a more rigid bag.

Make it your own

Use the swivel-hook straps to change how the bag is carried, or sew them in a fixed position if you prefer a single configuration.

Divide the lining pocket with a vertical seam or leave it as one wide pocket. The Altea Coin Purse can be made as a coordinated accessory.
