What you’ll make
The Ian is a compact card holder with a central zippered pocket. Its two outer sides hold four cards in total, while the center can carry coins, folded bills, or other small essentials.
Carry it in a pocket or add a loop and swivel hook for hanging. The small pieces and mix-and-match design make this a practical way to use coordinated fabric scraps.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Prepare layered card pockets and finish their upper edges.
- Align the pocket pieces with the pattern notches.
- Secure the layers before assembling the purse.
- Install a zipper between the exterior and lining.
- Manage bulky intersections without crowding the zipper teeth.
- Turn and shape the purse, then close the lining opening.
Fabric and supplies
Use small scraps of canvas, poplin, or similar fabric. The exterior sections can match or combine several prints, and poplin works well for the lining.
The design also uses a nonmetal zipper. If your fabric frays readily, the class shows where overcasting helps control loose threads before assembly.
Make it your own
- Combine several exterior fabrics or keep every section matching.
- Add a decorative label before closing the outer seams.
- Insert a ribbon loop or tab for a swivel hook.
- Use straight, zigzag, or decorative stitching on the pocket edges.
- Compare the zipper-free Mini Card Holder.
- Choose the roomier Manila Wallet when you need more space.
The class includes the sewing video and a downloadable A4 pattern with the exterior base, outer and inner card-pocket pieces, and lining.
