What you’ll make

Sew a close-fitting nursing top with two crossover front panels and a built-in inner tank layer.

The inner layer has a low armhole for nursing access, while the overlapping outer fronts provide coverage. The pattern has long sleeves, and the class discusses shortening them.

What you’ll learn in this class

  • Choose stitches that preserve the stretch of knit fabric.
  • Finish the inner armholes, neckline, and hem.
  • Hem the curved crossover edges before assembly.
  • Join the layered fronts accurately at the shoulders and sides.
  • Set in the sleeves without stretching the fabric.
  • Quarter and attach a knit neckband smoothly.

Fabric choices

The sample combines ribbed viscose knit outside with a plain stretch knit inside. Jersey, modal, or lightweight sweatshirt knit can also work for the outer layer.

Choose an outer fabric with drape and some stretch rather than a stiff fabric. The inner knit needs enough elasticity for repeated nursing access.

Make it your own

  • Shorten the long sleeves for a short-sleeve version.
  • Extend the body if you prefer more coverage.
  • Compare it with the other nursing top, which opens at the neckline and can also be worn as a regular top.
  • Explore adaptable maternity projects such as the A-line dress and women’s athletic shorts.

Pattern sizing and fit

The PDF pattern covers sizes 36–50. Because measurements can change during pregnancy and nursing, measure carefully before choosing a size.

Compare the traced pattern with your body or a well-fitting knit top before cutting. In the photos, the instructor wears size 36 although her usual size is 38.

The class includes a complete sewing demonstration and a downloadable PDF pattern in sizes 36–50.
