What you’ll make
Sew a button-free children’s smock with an elasticated neckline and cuffs, sleeves, and two patch pockets finished with decorative inverted pleats.
The pullover design is easy for a young child to wear over everyday clothes at daycare or during messy activities at home.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Form and secure inverted pleats in patch pockets.
- Finish pocket openings with bias tape.
- Ease curved pocket edges into place.
- Join the sleeves to the front and back pieces.
- Finish seams with a zigzag stitch or serger.
- Create elastic casings at the neckline and cuffs.
Fabric and notions
The smock requires fabric and narrow elastic. Bias tape is demonstrated on the pocket openings, although a hemmed opening is also possible.
Choose a practical fabric suitable for frequent wear. When using a directional print, check the orientation of each sleeve before cutting.
Make it your own
Change the pocket placement, use one large center pocket, or choose contrasting bias tape. Add a hanging loop or name label at the back neckline.
Complete a daycare set with the multipurpose backpack, roll-up sleeping bag, and wet wipes cover.
Pattern sizes
The updated pattern includes sizes 1–2, 2–3, and 3–4, drafted for heights of 86, 92, and 98 cm.
Check the child’s measurements and adjust the neckline and cuff elastic as needed, since the amount of stretch varies between elastics.
