What you’ll make
The Torino is an easy children’s skirt with front darts, a row of buttons, and elastic through the back of the waistband.
The class sample has decorative buttons sewn through both front layers. You can instead make a functional opening with buttonholes.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Transfer notches and button-placement marks.
- Sew the double-fold front-edge finishes.
- Form and secure opposing front darts.
- Attach a waistband with elastic across the back.
- Finish the hem and position the buttons.
Fabric and materials
The samples use chambray and lightweight denim. Cotton, cotton blends, linen, denim, and lightweight corduroy are also suggested for different seasons.
You will also need waistband elastic and buttons. Make the buttons decorative or pair them with working buttonholes.
Make it your own
Check the length on the child before hemming, then shorten it if desired. Finish the hem with straight, decorative, or twin-needle stitching.
The pattern has no pockets, but you can add side-seam pockets or one or two back patch pockets using techniques from other children’s projects.
