What you’ll make
The Athens is a roomy, fully lined belt bag designed for crossbody wear. Choose the XL size or the larger XXL version.
A top zipper secures the main compartment, while an interior patch pocket keeps smaller items separate. The webbing strap is adjustable.
Opposing darts give the bag rounded volume without a separate gusset.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Stabilize the outer and lining pieces.
- Prepare an interior patch pocket.
- Add fabric or bias-tape zipper stops.
- Enclose the zipper between outer fabric and lining.
- Form opposing darts for volume.
- Assemble the curved body and turn the bag.
- Attach the adjustable strap and its hardware.
Fabric and materials
The class uses canvas for one exterior, velvet for another, and poplin for the lining. Corduroy is another suggested outer-fabric option.
Velvet and corduroy create thicker layers. A walking foot, roller foot, or seam-leveling tool can help feed bulky strap and side seams.
You will also need a zipper, bag webbing, an adjuster, and matching strap hardware.
Make it your own
Choose XL or XXL and combine contrasting outer and lining fabrics. Leave the interior pocket open, divide it into smaller sections, or add another pocket to the opposite lining panel.
