What you’ll make

Sew a compact coin purse with two separate zippered pockets, one opening from the top and the other from the bottom.

Use one compartment for coins and the other for cards, folded bills, keys or small essentials. At approximately 10 cm high, 12 cm wide and 3 cm deep, it fits easily in a pocket or bag.

What you’ll learn in this class

  • Layer the outer fabric, zipper and lining.
  • Install two opposite-facing zippered pockets.
  • Plan the placement of directional prints.
  • Move zipper sliders out of the stitching path.
  • Shape and reinforce the zipper ends.
  • Turn the purse through the lining.
  • Close the remaining lining opening.

Fabric choices

Canvas is recommended for the exterior and poplin for the four lining pieces. Add interfacing if the outer fabric lacks the body of canvas.

Each pocket can have a different lining, or all four lining pieces can match. Overcast fabrics that fray heavily before assembly.

Make it your own

Add fabric tabs, beads or another small detail to the zipper pulls. A hand-sewn faux-leather label is another demonstrated option.

Compare the Manila wallet and round coin purse.

Other options include the mini card holder and phone crossbody wallet.

The featured canvas also appears in the Nintendo Switch case and ukulele and guitar case.

Finished size

The finished coin purse measures approximately 10 cm high by 12 cm wide by 3 cm deep.
